The King of Protea! (eus)

While we like to use local and seasonal flowers whenever possible, sometimes it's just not possible! Like  when you find these amazing and humongous King Protea at the market on a cold morning in February.

The title of this post makes me think of New Orleans and more specifically Carnival Time in New Orleans which is in full swing (or so I hear). There is a mythical Mardi Gras Krewe called Proteus. They are one of the oldest krewes, having paraded since 1882. The identity of the King of Proteus remains a mystery and his float is shaped like a giant seashell, only fitting for the Shepard of the Seas...

 more Mardi Gras memorabilia....

Wish I was there. This is who I would be.

First 3 Carnival images from the New Orleans Public Library Archives. Costume design by Leda Plauche.

  1. Amazing costumes! I love the connection you made with the flower. I have never been to New Orleans--it's high on my list.
